Treating wastewater for the city
Date back to the Yuan Dynasty,Beijing began its practice of building drainage ditch and sewer.After the founding of the People's Republic of structed and the polluted Longxu River rehabilitated.Since the initiation of reform and opening-up policy,especially after the establishment of BDG,Beijing witnesses a faster development of wastewater services.On average,a new wastewater treatment plant and 100 km of sewers with high quality are put in place each year.The fast expansion of wastewater facilities ensure that the treatment capacity grows at a rate of more than 10% annually.The facilities now possessed by BDG have a capacity accounting for over 95% of total in Beijing urban area.By 2008,over 90% of wastewater in Beijing proper will be treated.
Quality service and effective management
BDG abides by the operation principles of "operation in full capacity and 100% compliance with effluent standards". We are responsible for operating 11 large and middle-sized municipal wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity of 2.8 million m3/day,among which 2.56 million m3/day is from facilities in Beijing urban districts accounting to 95% of total capacity in this area. The wastewater treatment plants operated by us, just name a few of them,include: Gaobeidian WWTP, Xiaohongmen WWTP and Qinghe WWTP in Beijing proper.
BDG boasts extensive experience and proven track record on the operation of large scale wastewater treatment plants employed diversified processes, ranging from conventional activated sludge, oxidation ditch, SBR, A2O to sophisticated MBR. We have achieved 100% effluent standards compliance and the effluent data issued to the public regularly. Group-wide standardized safety and quality assurance procedures are gradually established within BDG for the purpose of further improving operation efficiency and service level. As a result, all WWTPs have acquired ISO9002, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certificate.
Sewers network-systemic veins of city
BDG is responsible for the operation and management of sewers with a total length of nearly 4000 km located in the Beijing urban area. Integrated by an ongoing Wastewater Facilities Geographical Information System, we will gradually materialize our target of systematic and computerized management of sewer network, wastewater treatment plants and tertiary treatment facilities. We make best endeavor to ensure safe reliable operation of sewer network, focusing on well-planned daily inspection and maintenance, and seasonal flood control work. In addition, sophisticated sewer inspection and repair equipment is used in our daily work to achieve cost effective management of sewer networks.
Beneficial reuse of renewable resource
BDG spares no efforts in promoting the initiatives of reuse of treated wastewater and recycling of resources. Our practices of reclaimed water reuse and bio-gas power generation, and the technology of thermal energy recovery from wastewater through heat pump system enable us to make beneficial contributions to build economical society and circular economy which targeted by the government.
Reuse of reclaimed water
Serious scarcity of water resource in Beijing has become a bottleneck restricting the economic growth of the capital city. Reclaimed water, effluent from WWTP through advanced treatment, has become a reliable and economical new water resource because it has the features of easy accessible, reliable provision and constant flow. To achieve the target rate of 50% of WWTP effluent reuse by 2008, BDG actively promotes the initiatives of reclaimed water reuse. We encourage the application of the most advanced technologies in the world, such as: membrane filtration and reverse osmosis, in tertiary treatment. The reclaimed water thus produced can be used for diversified purposes including: replenishment of lakes and rivers, industrial cooling water, washing roads, cars and toilets etc, and save large quantity of precious clean water.
To promote the widely use of reclaimed water, BDG established the Jingcheng Water Reclamation Limited Company, whose responsibilities include financing, construction and operation of tertiary treatment facilities and distribution pipelines as well as development of reclaimed water market. Well-established internal quality control system and the Reclaimed Water Monitoring Center, the first one of its kind in China, guarantee the quality and safety of reclaimed water, and ensure customers can access satisfactory reused water.
Sludge Disposal
Sludge is a byproduct generated during the process of wastewater treatment. With increasing number of completed WWTPs and expansion of treatment capacity, sludge generation has sharply increased. Now we are facing a new pressing challenge arose by sludge disposal. Thousands of tons of sludge produced daily from the wastewater treatment plants under BDG need to be appropriately disposed to avoid secondary pollution. Through comprehensive economic and technical feasibility study, we work out a sustainable sludge strategy incorporating diverse technologies and disposal processes, such as: sludge composting, thermal drying, etc., to realize volume reduction, nuisanceless and beneficial reuse of sludge.
Bio-gas power generation
Our practice of electricity generation through methane gas produced in the process of sludge digestion can not only reduce the air pollution caused by the emission of combustible gas but also reclaim energy. Electricity annually generated by the Biogas Generation Plant in Gaobeidian WWTP is equivalent to the electricity consumption consumed by 5000 households each year, which can supply 25% of plant's energy needs.
Wastewater heat pump
The heat pump system, developed by BDG, uses secondary effluent as water source and makes use of thermal energy in effluent flow to provide cooling and heating for buildings, which can maintain effective and reliable cooling and heating results. The wastewater heat pump system has obtained successful application in BDG Training Center and office buildings of Jiuxianqiao Reclamation Plant and Beixiaohe WWTP with total building area of thousands of square meters.
Grasping new growth opportunities seeking great-leap-forward development
Investment & Financing
Since BDG's establishment, we do all our work pertaining to the development of water industry energetically and focus our business on the direction of nurturing our own strength of self-financing to ease the burden of the government on capital investment. We entered into cooperation relationship with Beijing Capital Company and established a joint venture-Beijing Water Company, which provide a platform to broaden financing channels for capital investment. Through BOT arrangement, we engaged on the investment, construction and operation of Beijing Dingfuzhuang WWTP. BDG has formed associations with French Veolia Water and Malaysian Kerry Utility Limited on the investment and operation of Beijing Lugouqiao WWTP, which is the first plant in Beijing with involvement of foreign direct investment and operation. We purchased Huangcun WWTP located at the Daxing District of Beijing. Through international competitive bidding, we won an operation contract in Guangzhou to operate and maintain Xianglang WWTP and its collection system for 17 years. This is first project in China which is financed and operated by market forces. We succeeded at the purchase of 70% of shares of Liangyungang Water Supply Company through competition and became the first wastewater utility in China who set foot on water supply business.

BDG is committed to pressing ahead the great cause of "sustaining a clean water environment for human being" through continuous innovation and collaborative research. In addition to a competent and high quality in-house specialist team, we have recruited renowned national and international specialists as technical advisers, and established multi-level, multi-dimension cooperative relationship with academia and research bodies, such as: China Academy of Science, Qinghua University and Peiking University and so on. Thanks to these concerted efforts, we have made supernormal progress on scientific research and engineering design, and achieved a number of patents on wastewater treatment equipment.
Technical Service
BDG is qualified to provide comprehensive programme of vocational training leading to vocational qualification in terms of wastewater and sludge operator, laboratory technician, pumping station operator, sewer operator and mechanician. We have trained thousands of skilled operators and technician for wastewater treatment plants across China. We also take advantage of our experience and competence to provide comprehensive engineering consulting services for wastewater treatment projects in other cities outside Beijing.
BDG Laboratory Center is a professional agency providing water and sludge analysis services. Equipped with the first class instruments and equipment, the center is certificated by the National Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau to make 123 kinds of chemical analysis. In addition to providing accurate and reliable analysis data in terms of influent and effluent to wastewater treatment plants under BDG, the center also carry out laboratory and analysis service for external industries, businesses, research institute, hotel and restaurant and so on.
